The Tarragona Human Tower Competition (Concurs de Castells) is a biennial event in which teams build human pyramids at the Tarraco Arena Plaça, a massive former bullring. This Catalan tradition, recognized by UNESCO, dates back to the 18th century and serves as a powerful symbol of regional identity and social cohesion. Participants join these "colles" (clubs) to demonstrate the motto "Strength, Balance, Courage, and Reason," proving that a community can reach incredible heights through collective effort. The goal is to construct the tallest tower, a process that relies on the "pinya" - a dense human base that provides both structural support and a safety cushion within the circular arena.

The competition is judged on a points system that evaluates the height, difficulty, and stability of each structure. Points are awarded differently depending on whether a tower is only "loaded" (reaching the top) or successfully "unloaded" (dismantled without falling). Spectators watch the teams work in a synchronized environment, guided by the sound of the "gralla" (a traditional flute) and drums, which indicate the different stages of the build. It is a technical display of balance in which the base's physical strength must perfectly match the climbers' agility.

The event follows a strict three-day timeline, traditionally held during the first weekend of October in even-numbered years. The first session takes place on Friday or Saturday for teams with lower rankings, while the main event on Sunday features the top-tier "colles." During the final day, teams have five rounds to attempt their most ambitious constructions. This chronological structure ensures that the most difficult and record-breaking towers are saved for the grand finale, drawing massive crowds to the historic bullring.

Good to know before going there
Securing a spot in the arena is highly competitive. Official tickets for the grand finale are priced affordably at approximately $21 USD (around €18), but they are released only on a specific day in July and typically sell out within minutes. Visitors who do not purchase during this window often face resale prices ranging from $70 to $115 USD on secondary markets.
To find out the exact release date for tickets and secure them at the official price, it is highly recommended to register an account on the official ticket page in advance to ensure a faster checkout. However, please note that the option to create an account, subscribe to the newsletter, or set up email alerts only becomes available on the official page starting in May or June—roughly one to two months before the official July sale begins.
