Gangasagar Pilgrimage
Event Highlights
Short description
The Gangasagar Mela is a colossal Hindu pilgrimage celebrated as a joyous tribute to the descent of the River Ganges to Earth, and it is recognized as the world’s second-largest human congregation after the Kumbh Mela. The core of the pilgrimage is the Holy Dip (Punya Snan) at the confluence of the River Ganges and the Bay of Bengal, a ritual performed at an astrologically precise moment that devotees believe purifies the soul and grants ultimate salvation (Moksha).
The most famous attractions revolve entirely around this profound spiritual dedication. The central sites are the Kapil Muni Temple, where pilgrims offer prayers immediately after the dip, and the confluence point itself, which serves as the stage for the massive, sacred bathing ritual.
Another major draw is the sight of thousands of ascetic holy men, particularly the Naga Sadhus, who gather to perform rigorous spiritual rites. This intense display of devotion, along with vibrant folk performances and grand evening Aarti ceremonies, creates the festival’s deep cultural showcase.
