Kolkata Durga Puja – Pandals Festival

Kolkata Durga Puja is a ten-day annual festival celebrating the Hindu Goddess Durga's decisive victory over the buffalo demon Mahishasura. This triumph marks the period when the Goddess is traditionally believed to make her brief annual visit to her maternal home (maika) with her four children (Lakshmi, Saraswati, Ganesha, and Kartikeya). This cultural narrative of a joyous homecoming transforms Kolkata into a sleepless, city-wide spectacle recognised by UNESCO. The celebration culminates on Bijoya Dashami (Day of Victory), which is also a time of sadness, as the rituals mark her sorrowful departure and return to her husband's abode.

The most famous attractions are spectacular, temporary artistic Pandals (pavilions). These thematic structures are often elaborate replicas of renowned temples and international landmarks or contemporary artistic marvels, housing magnificent Goddess idols. This spectacle becomes the focus of Pandal Hopping, an experience where crowds roam all night, moving between the thousands of structures to see the creativity of diverse community groups, including places like Suruchi Sangha, Naktala Udayan Sangha or Bagbazar. The final public spectacle is the Bisarjan (immersion ceremony), where idols are carried in massive, joyous processions to be submerged in the river Hooghly, symbolising her return to the divine cosmos and her embrace of the cycle of creation and dissolution.
