Aomori Nebuta Festival
Event Highlights
Short description
The Aomori Nebuta Festival is a major Japanese cultural spectacle, ranking among Japan’s most significant summer festivals (matsuri). Far from a casual neighborhood event, this formal, six-day evening procession showcases immense, illuminated paper floats (nebuta) crafted in the likeness of mythical figures, historical heroes, and gods. The entire event serves as an enjoyable but precise competitive showcase for the craftsmanship and dynamic operation of these towering works of art, orchestrated by the host city.
The primary attraction is the nightly parade of the giant Nebuta floats, some reaching nine meters wide and five meters tall. These detailed, three-dimensional sculptures are mounted on carts and skillfully pushed through the streets, accompanied by synchronized dancers (haneto) and musicians playing traditional taiko drums. The spectacle culminates in a formal selection process where the most impressive float is crowned the winner, followed by a dramatic daytime parade featuring the prize-winning floats and a spectacular marine display on the final night.
