Morioka Sansa Odori Festival
Event Highlights
Short description
The Morioka Sansa Odori Festival is Japan’s premier summer dance festival, deriving its name from a local legend where villagers danced sansa around a rock in celebration after a demon was sealed there. This competitive, four-day event is fundamentally a massive taiko drumming and dance parade, featuring tens of thousands of participants who process nightly along the city’s central street.
The most famous attraction is the Guinness World Record-certified simultaneous taiko drum performance, a stunning display of synchronised rhythm and scale. The parade itself is a central highlight, led by the elegant Miss Sansa Odori dancers and featuring groups in vibrant yukata (summer kimono) and traditional floats. The friendly atmosphere encourages participation, culminating in a large Wa-Odori (circle dance) where visitors are warmly invited to join the local dancers.
