Magdalena Festival – The Birthday of a City
Intro
Magdalena Festival is a nine-day celebration of the birth of Castellón de la Plana in eastern Spain. It commemorates the city's founding, when King James I of Aragon granted the inhabitants permission in 1251 to move from the Hill of Mary Magdalene down to the site of the present-day city.
The festival highlights include a pilgrimage to the old hillside site, where walkers carry palm canes tied with green ribbons and share bread rolls as their ancestors did, daily firecracker shows called mascletàs, a night parade of colorful wheeled lanterns, and all kinds of street celebrations.
On the final night, the festival queens close the celebrations with the Magdalena Vítol, a festive farewell cried out from the City Hall balcony.
