Joujouka Festival – A Sufi Musical Retreat
The Joujouka Festival is a remote musical retreat held in a small village in the Rif Mountains. This experience centers on a complex tradition of hypnotic Sufi melodies that local families have performed for centuries for spiritual healing. The village gained global fame after Brian Jones of the Rolling Stones recorded them in the 1960s, famously celebrating their sound as "the 4,000-year-old rock and roll band." To preserve this legendary heritage, the event is organized as a strictly limited, all-inclusive stay where you live and sleep in the musicians' homes. Without hotels or formal stages, you simply follow the authentic rhythm of the village and attend intimate evening performances.
The most interesting part is the raw, trance-inducing energy of the nightly rituals. You sit on carpets just inches away from the performers as their ancient flutes and drums create a powerful, meditative atmosphere. A key highlight is the appearance of Boujeloud, a dancer in goat skins who performs a wild fertility rite. This deep connection to the Rolling Stones and the "Beat Generation" writers still draws a small, dedicated group of travelers each year. With only about 50 spots available, the barrier between guest and musician completely disappears, offering a rare chance to immerse yourself in a mystical lifestyle that has remained unchanged for generations.
