Intro

The National Festival of Popular Arts (NFPA) is Morocco's oldest and most prestigious cultural event, held annually in Marrakech every July. Since its founding in 1959, it has served as a "living museum," gathering hundreds of Berber dancers, Gnaoua musicians, and tribal performers from every corner of the country. For travelers, it serves as a concentrated gateway to Moroccan traditions, moving beyond the typical tourist paths to showcase authentic regional performances that are rarely seen together in one place.

Event Highlights

The most fascinating aspect of the festival is its primary venue: the majestic 16th-century ruins of El Badi Palace. During the event, the ancient sandstone walls are dramatically lit to host high-energy performances under the desert stars. Another major highlight is the "Fantasia" (Tbourida), a spectacular display of traditional horsemanship where riders in ceremonial dress charge in unison and fire their muskets in a thunderous explosion of sound. It is a loud, historically rich experience that perfectly blends Morocco’s imperial history with its rugged nomadic spirit.
