Intro

The Morioka Sansa Odori Festival is Japan's premier summer dance festival, deriving its name from a local legend where villagers danced sansa around a rock in celebration after a demon was sealed there. This competitive, four-day event is fundamentally a massive taiko drumming and dance parade, featuring tens of thousands of participants who process nightly along the city's central street.

Google Maps location of the main event activities can be found here.

Event Highlights

The most famous attraction is the Guinness World Record-certified simultaneous taiko drum performance, a stunning display of synchronised rhythm and scale. The parade itself is a central highlight, led by the elegant Miss Sansa Odori dancers and featuring groups in vibrant yukata (summer kimono) and traditional floats. The friendly atmosphere encourages participation, culminating in a large Wa-Odori (circle dance) where visitors are warmly invited to join the local dancers.
