Taimatsu Akashi Fire-Torch Festival
Event Highlights
Short description
The Taimatsu Akashi is a traditional Japanese fire-torch festival held annually in Sukagawa City, Fukushima Prefecture. With a history stretching back over 400 years to the Warring States period, this autumn event serves as a memorial originally conceived to honor the spirits of those who perished during the 1589 battle for Sukagawa Castle. The spectacle centers on the dramatic combustion of massive torches, lit to mourn the souls of the fallen soldiers. It’s considered one of Japan’s major fire festivals, providing a compelling blend of serious historical commemoration and organized public excitement.
The event’s attractions begin with the lively Taimatsu Procession, where local youth vigorously parade the giant torches through the city streets. The most famous of these is the Ohtaimatsu (the main torch), which is a truly huge structure, typically weighing three tons and standing ten meters tall. Following the parade, around 30 torches are erected on Mt. Gorozan. The evening climax features these torches being set ablaze, with the mountainside illuminated by roaring flames, all to the powerful, resonant rhythm of the traditional Taimatsu Taiko drumming.
