Intro

The Tokushima Awa Odori Dance Festival is arguably Japan's most famous and beloved summer dance event. Held annually in Tokushima City, this festival features massive processions where thousands of dancers, known as ren, perform the unique and energetic Awa Odori dance style. The entire city transforms into a performance space for this friendly yet deeply traditional celebration of local culture, characterised by the distinct rhythm of shamisen, bells, flutes, and drums.

Event Highlights

The festival's main attraction is simply witnessing the infectious, non-stop motion of the dancers, who move with contrasting styles: high-stepping, precise movements for men and graceful, swaying movements for women wearing traditional hats. Visitors can purchase tickets to watch the best-known ren perform in ticketed stages, or they can simply join the free street-side parades, which often include a chance for everyone to participate in the "Niwaka Ren" (casual groups) and learn a few basic steps.
