Rhodes Medieval Rose Festival
The Rhodes Medieval Rose Festival is a historical reenactment held within the UNESCO-protected Old Town of Rhodes, often cited as the world's oldest inhabited medieval city. The event focuses on the era of the Knights of Saint John - a medieval military order, also known as the Hospitallers, who fortified the island and ruled it as a sovereign state for over two centuries. Unlike a typical fair, this festival uses the actual 14th-century fortifications and the Palace of the Grand Master to recreate the functional life of the citadel through period-accurate workshops and traditions.
One of the main draws is the dramatization of the "Dragon of Rhodes" legend, which tells the story of a young knight, Dieudonné de Gozon, who defied orders to slay a serpent terrorizing the local valley. Visitors can see this myth brought to life alongside displays of archery, sword fighting, and equestrian skills performed in the stone moats of the castle. Beyond the combat, the festival features skilled artisans demonstrating stone carving and weaving, offering a rare look at the crafts that sustained the island's population during the Middle Ages.
