Las Fallas de Valencia is a massive celebration of creative destruction where the city is overtaken by hundreds of multi-story, satirical monuments built solely to be burned to the ground.
The festival originates from an ancient carpenter's rituals of burning their winter leftovers, but today, that purpose has shifted: those "leftovers" are now huge monuments designed to represent society's flaws and cultural absurdities. These structures, known as fallas, are crafted from wood and papier-mâché to act as a giant burning irony, mocking everything from corrupt politicians to pop culture icons with biting humor. It is a rare cultural phenomenon where a year’s worth of elite craftsmanship is transformed into a temporary museum of mockery, existing only for a few days before its fiery end.

The most fascinating aspect of the festival is the surreal contrast between the delicate beauty of the art and the raw, violent power of the gunpowder that permeates the air.
Beyond the visual scale of the monuments - some reaching over 20 meters in height - the true draw is the sensory intensity: you see neighborhoods competing for the most impressive display while hearing the constant roar of firecrackers. It is a unique experience where the city’s streets become a crowded labyrinth of satire, filled with people in ornate traditional silk clothing moving through a landscape that feels like a beautiful, chaotic dream.

While the festival spans nearly three weeks, its most intense parts are concentrated within the final four days, from March 16th to the 19th. The experience is built around several core traditions: the Mascletà (a rhythmic firecracker concert), the Ofrenda (a massive floral parade), and La Cremà (the ritual burning). The sequence begins with the Plantà, completed by the morning of the 16th, when all monuments are finally erected. Every day, the Mascletà takes place in the early afternoon in the main square, followed by pyrotechnic shows in the middle of the night. During the late afternoons of the 17th and 18th, the floral tributes of the Ofrenda take place, leading up to the grand finale on the night of March 19th with La Cremà, when the monuments are set ablaze in the late-night hours, surrendering a year of labor to a majestic and ephemeral inferno.
