Villajoyosa “Moors & Christians” Festival
The Villajoyosa "Moors & Christians" Festival is a spectacular historical event, declared of International Tourist Interest, that commemorates the local victory over Muslim pirates in 1538. For an entire week, the town transforms into a living stage where locals, organized into "companies" of Moors and Christians, parade in stunningly elegant costumes accompanied by brass bands and gunpowder blasts. Unlike similar festivals across Spain, this celebration is uniquely defined by its deep connection to the sea, turning the entire coastline into a dramatic open-air theater.
The most fascinating highlight is El Desembarco, a one-of-a-kind event that takes place at dawn on the town's main beach: over 30 Moorish ships appear on the horizon under a barrage of lights and cannon fire, while armies clash at the water's edge in an incredibly realistic battle reenactment. Beyond this naval assault, you shouldn't miss the grand gala parades, where thousands of participants showcase opulent armor, silks, and jewelry, or the vibrant street parties and local gastronomy found around the "kabilas" and "barracas," which keep the city's energy electric until the early hours.
