Moors and Christians is a romantic reenactment of a battle fought in 1276 between Moors invaders and local Christians. If features more than 10000 “troops” all dressed in jaw-dropping costumes. On the last festival day, most of them will “fight” using real medieval guns and real gunpowder, which will make Alcoy streets full of smoke and soul-shattering rumble.
According to a local legend, San Jorge appeared during the battle and helped the Christians army to win the battle. In recognition of his help, the Alcoy folks made San Jorge their patron saint and promised to hold a festival in his honor.
