With a history of more than 1000 years, Kyoto Gion is believed to be the most famous festival in Japan. It is intended to drive away evil spirits through a month long period of specific ceremonies. Among all, the most important is the lavishly decorated palanquins parades from the 17th and 24th of July.
What makes Kyoto Gion Matsuri really impressive is the size of some palanquins, which are up to 25 meters tall, weigh up to 12 tons, and are pulled on man-sized wheels.
