Intro

The Cooper’s Hill Cheese-Rolling Wild Race is one of England’s oldest and most surreal traditions. The event is deceptively simple: a 4kg wheel of Double Gloucester cheese is sent rolling down a very steep, 180-meter hill, and a group of brave participants hurls themselves after it. Because the cheese can reach speeds of over 110 km/h, it is practically impossible to catch; instead, the first person to cross the finish line at the bottom wins the cheese and the glory.

Event Highlights

For visitors, the spectacle is both hilarious and heart-pounding. You can join thousands of spectators lining the banks to cheer on the runners, who often end up tumbling, rolling, and bouncing down the grass in a mess of arms and legs. Beyond the main races—which include separate rounds for men and women—you can soak up the festive, grassroots atmosphere of the local area. Whether you are there to witness the funny falls or to brave the slope yourself, it is an unforgettable celebration of human spirit and absurdity.
