Event Highlights

Short description

The Mumbai Ganesh Chaturthi Idol Festival is a gigantic event that marks the birthday of the elephant-headed deity, Lord Ganesha. This ten-day festival completely transforms the look and feel of Mumbai as families and communities set up thousands of large clay idols in homes and public pandals (temporary shrines). The event is a traditional holiday and a massive community gathering, temporarily turning the city into a vast, open-air gallery dedicated to the god.

The uniqueness of this festival lies in the sheer size of the public statues, some of which are as tall as buildings, notably those found in iconic locations like Lalbaugcha Raja and Ganesh Galli. On the final day, known as Ganesh Visarjan, these large installations are carried through the streets in major, well-attended processions until they reach the shores of the Arabian Sea. There, the statues are thrown into the sea in an act that symbolises the cycle of creation and dissolution, reminding devotees that all forms are temporary and must ultimately return to nature’s elements.
